We exhibit a compact metric on the 2-disk having no upper
bound for the Morse index of simple closed geodesics. Consequences: On
any surface there is a metric having simple closed geodesics of
arbitrarily high Morse index. On any 3-manifold there is a metric having
embedded minimal tori of arbitrarily high Morse index. This is joint work
with Tobias Colding.
