ART (CGI) 322: Evolving Techniques in Digital Photography.

4 hours (2, lecture; 2, lab), 3 credits. Computational algorithms and software to use multiple aspects of an image. Examples include panning in space and stitching the image together and exposure bracketing to manipulate dynamic range. PREREQ: ART (CGI) 321.

Resources and Idealized Course Outline
Intro
  •  step through using Lightroom and Photoshop for HDR. Probably too big an overview and will be chaotic. Will redo.
    • Assignment: Get equipment and take several differently exposed pictures of a scene with high light variability (high dynamic range). Use different shutter speeds. Try different apertures, isos. You can do this handheld but try not to shake or move the camera too much. Modern software can account for small variations.  Take pictures as raw if you can. Bring in photos. This first phase is also meant to see the range of backgrounds and what I must review.
  • Feb 5 : Show process of acquisition with my camera tripod. Talk about processing and ghosting.
    • See if we can get head shots with overexposed backgrounds

HDR Imaging, Camera Raw and Tone Mapping
  Panoramas:
  • panoramas with hdr
    • hdr is a natural for panoramas as lighting can change drastically in a large sweep

  Focus Stacking
:
  • New concept of camera in Lytro
    • what can we do now in preparation for computational photography focus manipulation cameras
  • creating totally focused photos
  • creating photos with several regions of focus
  • focus conveys an attitude
