Rigorous Mathematics with Proofs for High School Students in the Bronx

The College Now program at Lehman College offers this 4 credit college course to high school students that can place into precalculus on the COMPASS placement exam. The courses are fully funded through the College Now program with paid faculty, free textbooks and college credit. Mr. Gantz is the coordinator and Prof. Sormani is the adviser. You may also contact a college now liasson at a participating high school. All students who enroll in this course will become part of the Lehman College Math Circle.

Topics:

Detailed day to day syllabi with homework: A similar course will be taught every semester. High schools who wish to design an appropriate precalculus course may wish to contact Professor Sormani to discuss their syllabi and textbook. Note that there is a CLEP Precalculus Exam. It is of utmost importance that students learn this material thoroughly before attempting calculus. This is both because it is necessary to know these subjects to truly understand calculus and because these subjects are as important or even more important than calculus in college level science and business courses.

The College Now Precalculus offered at Lehman College is a one semester intensive course. Students who cannot keep up the pace of the precalculus course for the entire semester may wish to remain as members of the Lehman College Math Circle and complete the precalculus course the subsequent semester. In the past only a few students with serious after school conflicts had to drop out of the precalculus class. However, all students should understand that this is an option.

Remember the Lehman College Math Circle is not only an extra curricular activity that will look good on a college application. It will provide you with the skills needed to succeed in college!
